During WWI, farmers produced so many crops and live stock, but when the prices fell; they tried to produce even more to pay off the debt of the land that they had bought with the money that was loaned to them by the banks. when they couldn't pay off the debt (because no one could afford the crops they were producing) they had to move off of their property and leave their farms behind.
