The main way in which South Carolina responded to the election of Abraham Lincoln as president in 1860 was that they seceded from the Union, since they believed Lincoln would put an end to slavery.

On December 20th of 1860, a month after the election of Abraham Lincoln as President of the United States, South Carolina seceded from the United States. Its main reason was that Abraham Lincoln was an anti-slavery candidate, while the state of South Carolina had its main work force made by slaves (both its economy and its social system were based in slavery). It was the first American state to separate from the rest of the country. Subsequently, ten other states seceded from the United States, and immediately joined to form the Confederate States of America.
