the ratio is 2:1 so to find how many parts we have, we do 2+1 which gives us 3

the total area of the square before it was cut, was 36. 36÷3=12. so one part is 12cm

this means that the first rectangle has an area of 24cm and the second has an area of 12cm

we know that a square has 4 equal sides and so each side would have to be 6 to give us 36cm

this means that the length for both rectangles is 6cm

now we can use this to work out the width.

rectangle A has an area of 24cm as we said before. 24÷6=4. the width is 4cm

rectangle B has an area of 12cm. 12÷6=2. the width is 2cm
