Slavery was greatly increased as a result of the Punic Wars.
The supply of slaves used by Rome often came from war captives. Over 100,000 new slaves were taken as a result of the First Punic War, and almost 200,000 new slaves added from the Second Punic War. The wars also had left land available for farming at low cost, and land purchasers were looking for laborers to work those farms.
