The United States actually passes a law called the Communist Control Act in 1954. This law, aimed at members of the communist party, established severe penalties for any group that was calling for a violent overthrow of the US government.

Along with this, the government made individuals take federal or state jobs sign an oath of loyalty. These oaths varied but were all around the same concept of pledging allegiance to the US and denying ever being part of the communist party.
