The Homestead Acts were a series of law passed in the United States which granted land to people willing to relocate. This land was usually government land or land in the public domain. More than 160 million acres were given away, which represented about 10% of the total area of the United States. Most of this land was located west of the Mississippi River, in an effort to expand the population of the country west.
