The Berlin blockade was an attempt by the Soviet Union to block the roads to the French, British and American sectors of the city of Berlin. The Soviet Union wanted these Western powers to relinquish their claims to parts of Berlin. These sectors were within the Russian-occupied East Germany. It is considered the first major clash between the Soviet Union and the USA during the Cold War. This blockade was instituted three years after the end of the Second World War. Eventually, the French, British and Americans airlifted supplies into West Berlin.
