People wanted a decent living and probably a chance to become wealthy. Another was to acquire some land, since it was difficult in England to earn land.
Religion was another one, people wanted to worship their own more freely. Kings and Queens were interested in creating colonies because it contributed to the political, economic and military superiority of a country.
