You maybe talking about Ashoka, an Indian Emperor of the
Maurya Dynasty who ruled around 268 to 232 BCE. Ashoka was a great conqueror and
has greatly expanded his empire on his reign. However, his greatest mark is
being a peaceful ruler after his Buddhist conversion. Unusual for the time, his
reign respected all faiths and enforced probably the first animal welfare laws.
