This cartoon was published following the contested election of 1876, in which both sides accused themselves of fraud. Nast compares the South African Republican Republican vote to the Northern Irish Catholic Democratic vote. Under such circumstances, winning elections is not an honor, and neither Democrats nor Republicans should claim special virtue.
