One of the characteristics of metals is free electrons. When an electron is heated it gains kinetic energy and starts to move and vibrate, this vibration starts to pass through the “cold ions” passing the heat until all the ions are hot, this makes the transfer of the heat very fast from the hot to cold surface of the metal.
