After reading a poem, what is the first thing you should do to begin analyzing it?

To find quotes and analysing them and what does this suggest.
Just using common knowledge, most poems are written in a symbolic form. Like, figuratively.
So, I would start out by kind of trying to decipher the poem, or figuring out what the author is trying to say. The theme, basically.
