Apparent magnitude will generally be the larger number, but we need to know if there is any dust or gas between it and us to absorb or scatter its light. The absolute magnitude of a star is the apparent magnitude it would have if it were 10 parsecs away from us, and there was no dust or gas between it and us to absorb or scatter its light. If the star is moved closer, its apparent magnitude will become larger.
