Ten Thousands – 1

Total value  

  • Total value is given as the product of the digit and its place value.
  • For example; in the number, 13,548.  
  • Total value of digits 1, 3, 5, 4, and 8 in the number 13,548 will be;

1 x 10,000 = 10,000

3 x 1000    = 3,000

5 x 100      = 500

4 x 10        = 40  

8 x 1          = 8

The sum of the total values of digits in a number will be equivalent to the value of that number.

  • Standard form of a number is written in number form.
  • For example; 13,548 is in standard form or as a standard notation.

Unit form  

  • This involves writing number using place value units.

For example: in 13,548,  

Ten Thousands – 1

Thousands - 3

Hundreds - 5

Tens - 4

Ones -8

  • Hence, the Unit form 13,548 is 1 Ten thousand, 3 thousands, 5 hundreds, 4 tens and 8 ones  

Word form  

  • Word form of a number is stated from the unit form.
  • In our example the word form will be; Thirteen thousands, five hundred and forty eight.

Expanded form  

  • Expanded form involves writing numbers by presenting the value of each digit in the number.
  • Expanded form of a number is equivalent to the sum of the value of each digit in the number.

For example: In the number, 13,548.  

Total value of digits 1, 3, 5, 4, and 8 in the number 13,548 will be;

1 x 10,000 = 10,000

3 x 1000    = 3,000

5 x 100      = 500

4 x 10        = 40  

8 x 1          = 8

Therefore; the expanded form is;

13,548 = (1 x 10,000) + (3 x 1,000) + (5 x 100) + (4 x 10) + (8 x 1)
