A fracture is a broken bone. Medical intervention is necessary. Call 999 emergency service if the broken bone was caused by a serious accident or injury.
What should you do if a fracture is open?
Move the person only if it is required to prevent further harm. While you're waiting for medical assistance, do these steps right away:
- stop any bleeding. With a clean cloth, clean piece of clothing, or a sterile bandage, apply pressure to the wound.
- Never attempt to correct the bone or push a protruding bone back in.
- Use cold packs to reduce swelling and ease pain. Avoid putting ice on the skin directly. A towel, piece of cloth, or other material can be used to wrap the ice.
- Assist with shock. Lie the down a person with the head lower than the trunk if they are feeling dizzy or breathing quickly.
