x+x-1+x+1 =120

3x=120

x=40

40-1=39

40+1 =41

39 +40 +41 = 120

 ages are 39 40 & 41

we can represent their ages as
x,x+1,x+2
so the sum is adding them all
the sum is 120

x+x+1+x+2=120
3x+3=120
minus 3 both sides
3x=117
divide both sides by 3
x=39
x+1=40
