So individually, the couple decided to buy for each other that which they lack. Jim, the husband sold his watch to buy comb for Dell while Dell cut her and sold it to buy chain for Jim's watch. Thus, this excerpt is a perfect example of situational irony. The correct option is C. 

"The Gift of the Magi" was a short story written by O. Henry and published in 1905.The original gift in this story is Jim and Dell's willingness to make a sacrifice for one other in order to purchase a gift worthy and beautiful enough to be held by the other.
