Augusto Pinochet sought to clear leftism in Chile, and arrested and tortured thousands of people. Moreover, inflation fell and the economy of Chile increased during his rule. Any political opposition was forbbiden.

Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte was a Chilean general, politician and dictator of Chile between 1973 and 1990 who served as Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army until 1998 and as President of the Government Junta of Chile between 1973 and 1981.
