The first paragraph discusses the idea that Americans are united as one despite their differences. The second paragraph discusses the idea that acts of intolerance make it difficult to believe that Americans are united as one. The author states in the first paragraph that, although America is an improbable idea, and that all the pieces that seem not to fit actually do, much like a knitted blanket of different coloured squares. The second paragraph goes against this idea, saying that because of all the differences, people in America have been persecuted based on their race, sex and sexuality and people have been taken advantage of in the name of capitalism. The only time, according to the author, that Americans are united are in times of tragedy, where all people are forced to reflect on what they have and appreciate things from a different perspective.
