A boat traveled 84 miles downstream and back. The trip downstream took 4 hours. The trip back took 28 hours. Find the speed of the boat in still water and the speed of the current.

Respuesta :

84 divided by 4 =21 , 21x28=588 , so 588 is the speed of the current

The speed of boat in still water is 12 mph and speed of current, is 9 mph.

What is downstream?

The word downstream (which is one word instead of being two words; down stream) mainly means the direction that the water in a river flows

Given:

Total time= 24 hours

Let x be the speed of the boat in still water.

Let y be the speed of the current.

The boat travelled 84 miles downstream.

let the total speed would be (x + y) mph.

Distance = speed × time

84 = 4(x + y)

21 = x + y.....................( 1)

The trip back took 28 hours.

Now, let the total speed would be (x - y) mph.

84= 28(x - y)

3 = x - y.............(2)

Solving (1) and (2)

24 = 2x

x = 24/2

x = 12 mph

and, 21 = 12 + y

y = 21 - 12

y = 9 mph
