I believe the answer is: democrats and republicans
Liberal and conservative depict the stance/principle that generally adopted by these two parties.
The democratic party tend to adopt liberal principle (such as pro aborteion, huge government power, welfare states, non-traditional gender roles) while the republican party tend to adopt conservative principle ( anti abortion, less government power, Less income tax, traditional gender roles, religious values)
