Kinetic energy
Kinetic energy is the energy possessed by a body in motion. When a body is made to move by a certain force, that force contributes to the kinetic energy that the body accrues.
Potential energy
This is the energy possessed by a body in a certain position relative to others. The body does not have to be in motion. For example, a stone of mass m raised at a vertical height h, possesses a potential energy given by (density×height ×gravity) relative to the ground.

Energy is defined as the ability or capacity to work. There are two types of mechanical energy which are potential energy and kinetic energy

Kinetic energy is the energy possessed by a body by virtue of its motion. Example includes;

  • a running bicycle
  • Moving water

Potential energy is the energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position. Examples of potential energy include:

  • A still water
  • A parked car
