Italian explorer Christopher Columbus thought he had reached East Asia on October 12, 1492, when he saw the Bahamas after sailing over the Atlantic Ocean and arriving in the Caribbean.
Columbus believed that his fleet had arrived on one of the several islands that Marco Polo had said were located close to Asia's coast. He reasoned that they must have arrived at the East Indies, a group of islands that are currently referred regarded as being close to India.
In 61 days, Columbus reached what is now known as the Bahamas. At first, he believed his strategy had worked and the ships had arrived in India. In fact, he referred to the natives as "Indians," a derogatory term that regrettably caught on. one of the planet's seven major geographical masses.
