Du Bois battled prejudice and discrimination all of his life. In the first half of the 20th century, he mostly contributed to discussions regarding race, politics, and history in the United States.
Du Bois insisted that sociology be an empirical science following the procedures used by the physical sciences, as opposed to developing theoretical formulations and researching abstract ideas. The two main goals of sociology are to establish a science of human conduct and to investigate the "deeds of men." Morris cited Du Bois as the first sociologist to define the agency of the oppressed. According to him, Du Bois elevated sociology to the status of a "emancipatory social science," established truth as a standard, and fostered a more open and inclusive academic community for the benefit of all.
