Only some of the numerous life-changing teachings in the book The Outsiders, including the idea that fighting is never a good idea no matter how dire the circumstances, are applicable to modern society.

Even while events similar to those in the book don't occur as frequently as they do now, we can still apply this lesson to our lives. The importance of this cannot be overstated considering the level of senseless bloodshed occurring around the world. We need to understand that using violence isn't always the best course of action. The book demonstrates how relying solely on violence will have disastrous results. Violence is bad, and when Johnny says as much to Ponyboy at the book's conclusion, it actually means it.
