Welles Remy Crowther was an American stocks trader and volunteer fireman who was noted for saving up to 18 lives during the September 11 attacks in New York City, during which he died.
Crowther contacted his mother from his workplace at 9:12 a.m. on September 11, 2001, nine minutes after United Airlines Flight 175 impacted the South Tower between floors 77 and 85 at 9:03 a.m. left the following message: "Hello, my name is Welles. I just wanted you to know I'm alright." Crowther went to the 78th floor sky atrium, where he found a number of survivors, including a critically wounded Ling Young, who worked on the 86th level of the New York Department of Tax and Finance.
When the plane hit the tower, Young was one of around 200 people waiting in a row of elevators to evacuate, and he was one of the few survivors.
Crowther led them to the only operational ladder while carrying a young woman on his back. The survivors pursued him 17 levels, where he abandoned the lady he was carrying before returning upstairs to assist the others.
He had a bandana wrapped around his nose and mouth when he returned to the 78th level to protect himself from the smoke and fog. He came upon another set of survivors, including AON Corp. employee Judy Wein, who worked on the 103rd level and had a fractured arm, damaged ribs, and a punctured lung.
According to Wein, Crowther assisted in putting out flames and providing first assistance. She then said to the group: "Anyone who is capable of resisting should do it right now. If you can assist others, please do so." He was also in charge of this organization.
As the tower residents made their way down to the street, Crowther returned up the stairs to assist the others. This was the final thing FDNY firefighters were spotted doing before the South Tower fell at 9:59 a.m.
Crowther's body, along with the bodies of numerous firemen and rescue workers, was discovered in March 2002 in an alleged command station in the South Tower atrium.
