Kino and the pearl

In John Steinbeck's novella "The Pearl," Kino and Juana have a son, Coyotito, who is stung by a scorpion. Since the doctor will not see them because they have no money, Kino tries his best to find a big and valuable pearl in the ocean to sell.

Kino succeeds, but the pearl only brings disaster and tragedy to the family. Juana, a wise and superstitious woman, often tells Kino to get rid of the pearl, but he only does it after Coyotito is killed.

Kino and Juana did not really need the pearl. They were happy even though they were poor. And Juana knew how to take care of Coyotito's wound. The ending of the tragic story comes to show that ambition and greed may bring disaster and sadness.
