When the British were coming he knew he couldn't disrupt them with his soldiers or else they would all be killed with nothing to show so he had his soldiers build defences and a bluff known as Bemis Heights so if they British came from the Hudson river or the road they would see them and take a detour.

A vary strategic move if you ask me,and it worked.
