Gilgamesh demonstrates the characteristics of an epic hero because he is determined and strong. In the story of Gilgamesh, it tells of Gilgamesh's journey and the hardships of his path, describing how he took a six week's long journey in just under four days, and the harsh terrain they hiked. This shows the defining characteristics of an epic hero, determination and strength, because it shows that even though the journey was intense, terrain was intense and dangerous, and the hike was hundreds of miles long, Gilgamesh pushed through to continue his journey.

Other traits Gilgamesh displays is confidence and compelling speech. as written in part two of Gilgamesh, Enkidu becomes frightened at the idea of pursuing Humbaba, saying he cannot continue the journey with Gilgamesh any longer. Gilgamesh spoke to Enkidu, saying " “Courage, dear brother, this is no time to give in to fear. We have come so far, across so many mountains, and our journey is about to reach its goal...Though your arms feel weak now and your legs tremble, you are a warrior, you know what to do. Shout out your battle-cry, let your voice pound like a kettle drum. Let your heart inspire you to be joyous in battle, to forget about death. If we help each other and fight side by side, we will make a lasting name for ourselves, we will stamp our fame on men’s minds forever." This displays confidence and compelling speech as Gilgamesh strongly encourages Enkidu to push on and continue on their journey, and to help him defeat Humbaba. This speech inspires Enkidu, and he agrees to stand by Gilgamesh's side in battle.
