If it is under 10 years then there must be payment for double the amount of time the marriage lasted. Aside from this rule, there are exceptions such as prenups which usually disclose pre-set rules for divorce. There is also the chance there is a fault in the divorce such as infidelity which depending on the case causes less payment to none at all.
