Both sides sides of the Cold War feared each so much that they were willing to abandon their ideals and feigning aspects for the sake of global domination and to expand their influence. The Soviet Union staged coups and communist revolutions that might end up as a dictatorship but as an ally of the USSR. America supplied anti revolutionaries with supplies and manpower and installed dictators across South America to expand their influence. One example is Argentina in the 70s.
The major fear for Americans during the Cold War was communism were:
