- We do this because in order to add the fractions together, they have to have the same denominator. In this case you find the LCF, (Least Common Factor) of 8 and that turns into the denominator for both.
- [tex]\frac{5}{8}[/tex] stays the same, but [tex]\frac{3}{4}[/tex] changes to [tex]\frac{6}{8}[/tex] because the LCF if 8, and to get to 8 we had to multiply 4 by 2. So since we multiplied the denominator, you must do the same to the numerator, hence why we went from 3 to 6.
- Since [tex]\frac{5}{8}[/tex] and [tex]\frac{6}{8}[/tex] have the same denominator, all you have to do is add the numerator.
