Laws that severely limited the rights of freedmen after Civil War
1) African Americans could marry & own some property but did not have rights of citizenship
2) help planters find workers to replace their slaves. Required freedmen to work
3) kept freedmen at the bottom of the social order in the South. Most called for the segregation of blacks and whites in public places
