The Morrill Act of 1862 created institutions in each state that educated people in professions that were in demand at the time.
The bill, which was introduced by Congressman Justin Smith Morrill, gave each state 30,000 acres of public land for each senator and representative. A fund to provide support for colleges in each state was then created with the money that was earned from the sale of the land.
