It seems like your pedaling a lot because it takes more energy and is way slower than a regular road. It you switch to the higher gear it will make you go slower because it is made for going down hill or going high speeds and a lower gear will help you more cause its easier and it will make it go faster.
The reason why it seems you have to cover a short distance when pedaling up the hill is explained in Paragraph 2 below.
What will happen if you switch to a higher gear hoping you wouldn't pedal too much is explained in paragraph 3 below.
- Bikes are usually configured in such a way that the mechanical advantage which is the ratio of output force to input force will increase when there is an increase in resistance like the question shows by climbing a hill.
- Now, since there is resistance from climbing the hill on the bike, it means that you must increase your effort by completing more revolutions since the bike tires itself would not complete that much revolutions required to counter the trade off distance.
- Finally, if you decide to switch to a higher gear it means it will become very difficult to pedal since you need power to do so.
