Spain was able to replace Portugal as the foremost seafaring nation partly because of Columbus's voyages.

As a result of Columbus's voyages, the New World of the Americas was rediscovered by the Europeans and led to Spain claiming a large portion of it.

Spain took over from Portugal as the foremost seafaring nation when:

  • they sent more ships to explore the Americas
  • they carried gold and other raw materials from the Americas to Spain
  • they sent Spanish people to colonize the Americas

In conclusion, Spain became the foremost sea power in the world as a result of their holdings in the Americas. This did not last however because after a series of wars and mismanagement of resources, the British took that title from them.
