hyper- over
hypo- below
iso- equal
Ex: a cell with a semipermeable membrane is put in the following solutions
Hypertonic solution;
this means that the solute is more concentrated on the outside of a cell
water would move out of the cell to dilute to the concentration
the cell would shrivel
Hypotonic solution:
this would mean solute is more concentrated on the inside of a cell
water would move into the cell
the cell could burst or lyse
Isotonic solution:
the solute is in equal concentrations inside and outside of the cell
it is in equilibrium
water still moves in and out of the cell though
