Water moves by osmosis, the net movement of water particles from a high concentration to a low concentration, across a selectively permeable membrane. If a solute becomes dissolved in water, the solution becomes hypertonic to the cell so water diffuses across the cell membrane and into the solution by osmosis. If a solution is hypotonic to the cell, water moves into the cell via osmosis.
