We can divide the given figure into smaller figures and then add their areas to find the total area. The figure is divided into three rectangles. One on the left that measures 5 x 2. One on the very right that measures 5 x 4. And finally, one in the middle that measures (5 - 3) x (9 - 4 - 2). The area of the leftmost one is 10, the area of the right most one is 20 and the area of the middle one is 6. The total area becomes 10 + 20 + 6 = 36.
instead of cutting things up, we can do another thing

see attachment
we can do
big rectangle-highlighted rectangle
area=lenght times width

the big one is 5 by 9 or 45 square units
the highlighted one's base is 9-2-4=9-6=3
so it is 3 by 3 or 9 square units

big-highligted=45-9=36 square meters
