At a convergent boundary, two tectonic plates are colliding. The denser plate (usually the oceanic plate) is forced to subduct underneath the less dense plate (usually the continental plate). This causes enormous stress at the boundary of subduction such that the two pates warp downwards at the boundary line forming a trench.
This stress also causes the overlying plate to develop fissures along the boundary. As the subducted plate ‘dives’ into the mantle it melts and the magma rises, with enormous pressure, through these fissures. At the surface, the magma erupts into a volcanic mountain.
