The nineteenth-century painting style that depicted people or objects
exactly as they appeared in real life is realism. As its name says,
realism depicts something real, and in a realistic manner. The artist
paints only what he or she sees, without personal impressions about the
object of art, which is the case in impressionism. Romanticism tends to
show exaggerated and distorted art, whereas realism depicts what is seen
in real life.
