In order to prevent the Federal Government from becoming too powerful, the framers of the U.S Constitution:

  1. Divided the government into three different branches (the legislative, the executive and the judicial).
  2. Gave each branch separate and very specific powers. So, while the legislative branch is responsible for making the laws, the executive branch has to carry out the laws and the judicial branch interprets them and is resposible for the administration of justice.
  3. Used a system called checks and balances. This system limits all the branches of government at the same time it gives each branch the right to amend or void acts of another that actually fall within its scope.
