Lamps light up by electricity. Although, i'm sure you knew that by now. When a light bulb connects to an electric power supply, an electric current flows between the two metal contacts. As electricity flows between the wires and filament, the filament heats up. The filaments begin to emit photons, which are essentially small packets of light.

Hope this helps!
