A people that lived along the banks of the Niger River. By 900, they grew prosperous by trading with Islamic lands. They traded gold, copper and African slaves. Around 1000 AD the King converted to Islam and the empire continued to be Islamic for several hundred years. The merchants and people in the cities were typically Islamic while the people in the countryside continued worshiping their traditional gods.

The question is talking about the Songhai Empire, this State was located in the Western part of Africa and has been one of largest states of the continent's history. Like the question points down, the Songhai Empire was wealthy thanks to the commerce of valuable goods and the control of the Trans-Saharan trade rout, and it was highly influenced by the Islamic culture and religion. Unfortunately, the royal descendants fought against each other to be the next ruler, and while doing that they were invaded by Morocco, which meant the decline and end of the  Songhai Empire.
