Generally, there are two forms of syringomyelia: congenital and acquired. Syringomyelia causes a wide variety of neuropathic symptoms due to damage of the spinal cord. If a tumor is causing syringomyelia, removing the tumor is the treatment of choice and almost always eliminates the syrinx.
