How did the views of Susan B. Anthony and Lucy Stone differ on the passage of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments?

Respuesta :

The Fourteenth amendment affirmed new rights to freed men and women. It also  mentioned gender for the very first time in the Constitution. The Fourteenth amendment stated that "all male citizens over twenty-one years old should be able to vote" which implied that only men had the constitutional right to vote, not women.

And on 1870, the Fifteenth amendment was affirmed which guaranteed that the right to vote should be infringed upon on account of race.

This however caused turmoil between women's rights activists. On one side you had Susan B. Anthony actively objecting the new law, in the sense that she wanted women to be included with african american men and on the other, you had Lucy Stone supporting the amendment as it was since she believed that women would be given the right to vote soon enough.

The two sides established two rival national organizations that aimed to win women the vote.

In 1868, the Fourteenth Amendment was ratified, confirming the new rights of emancipated women and men. No state could enact legislation that deprived them of their rights to "life, liberty, and property." The Fifteenth Amendment, which was ratified in 1870, stated that the right to vote "must not be denied on account of race."

Views of Susan B. Anthony and Lucy Stone were:

  • Activists fought tooth and nail over whether they should support or oppose the Fifteenth Amendment. The new law was opposed by Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. They desired that women be included with black men.
  • Others, such as Lucy Stone, were in favour of the amendment as it was. Stone predicted that women would have the right to vote in the near future.
  • During the 1860s, the emphasis on voting encouraged women's rights campaigners to focus on women's suffrage. The two parties formed two opposing national organisations with the goal of gaining women's votes.
