On July 30, 1619, at the church in Jamestown Island, the Governor of Virginia, Sir George Yeardley led the House of Burgesses, a unicameral body composed of the Governor, a Council of State designated by Virginia Company and 22 burgesses elected from the settlements of the Colony.  One of the first decisions of this House was to set the price of tobacco.
