Not sure about specific objects, but the symbolic purpose is to indistinctly reference aspects of feeling within the story(in this case).

"It's shadow slide across the water like a crocodile long and quiet." I think it means that Papa may never come back or he may come back. I think that the whole point of papa going away in the boat was to think for himself give himself a reason for family.
