An airplane releases a ball as it flies parallel to the ground at a height of 165 m. If the ball lands on the ground exactly 165 m from the release point calculate teh speed (v) of the plane. Neglect andy effects due to air resistance and use g = 9.18 m/s^2 for the acceleration due to gravity.

So the time taken by the ball to reach the ground is given by

[tex]165 = \frac{1}{2}*9.8*t^2[/tex]

[tex]t = 5.80 s[/tex]

now the speed of the plane is given as

[tex]v_x = \frac{\Delta x}{t}[/tex]

[tex]v_x = \frac{165}{5.80}[/tex]

[tex]v_x = 28.4 m/s[/tex]

so it is flying at speed 28.4 m/s
