To generate a series of truncated chains during DNA synthesis.

2'-3' dideoxynucleoside triphosphates do not contain 3' hydroxyl group in the sugar ring like dNTPs. Due to this DNA synthesis is stopped as there is no free 3'-OH group to which next dNTPS could be added by DNA polymerase.

This results in the formation of truncated DNA fragments.
